Metric vs Imperial: What's the Difference?

Most of the world cooks with metric — grams, litres, and Celsius. North American recipes typically use cups, ounces, and Fahrenheit. UK recipes add a third wrinkle: the UK pint (568 ml) and UK tablespoon (17.76 ml) differ from their US counterparts (473 ml and 14.79 ml respectively).

This converter keeps metric as the foundation. Enter any metric value and see the imperial equivalent instantly — or type in the imperial field to work the other way. Weight conversions (oz/lb ↔ g/kg) are the same worldwide. Toggle the UK/US switch to get the right volume figures for your recipe.

Temperature conversion is a constant source of confusion. A gas mark 6 oven is 200 °C or 400 °F. This tool converts both ways live so you can match any recipe to your oven.

Common questions

What is the difference between UK and US cups?
A US cup is 236.6 ml. A UK / metric cup is 250 ml. Most modern UK recipes use 250 ml cups, so if you're following a US recipe, the difference is small but can matter in baking.
Is a UK tablespoon the same as a US tablespoon?
No. A UK tablespoon is 17.76 ml; a US tablespoon is 14.79 ml. For most cooking this is negligible, but for spice-heavy or baking recipes the difference accumulates.
How do I convert cups to grams?
Cups measure volume, not weight — so there's no single answer. 1 cup of water = 240 ml ≈ 240 g, but 1 cup of flour ≈ 120–130 g depending on how it's packed. Use the Pretzel Prep Recipe Scaler for ingredient-specific conversions.
